Learn Chinese by speaking

TingWo 聽我 · "listen to me"

Bring your own Chinese text and learn to say it out loud.

Paste a chat, an article or a YouTube™ link, photograph a menu, or share text from any Android app. TingWo builds a study set from it and teaches you to speak, read, write and understand it, then schedules reviews for shortly before you would forget. There are no decks to build, and you can start without an account.

What TingWo does differently

It works from your own text

Most apps hand you a word list. TingWo builds its study sets from the Chinese you bring, so each word comes with the sentence you met it in.

One app for the whole learning day

Dictionary, speaking, reading, listening and writing drills, roleplay, daily news, stories, a private journal and a game are all in the same app.

Speaking comes first

You say the sentence out loud and record it, then hear the native version beside your own. Recordings stay on your device and are not uploaded.

It picks the new words for you

Choose your level once: old HSK, new HSK or TOCFL. TingWo flags the words that are new at that level and skips the ones you already know.

What is in the app

A dictionary that works offline

Look up a word by typing, handwriting, speaking or camera. Once synced, the dictionary is stored on your device, so lookups work without a connection. Drills and reviews still need one.

New-word detection

New words are flagged by your level, and your text is color-coded so you can see at a glance which words are new, known or mastered.

Speaking, four ways

Speaking drills, "How to say?", "Say It Better" and roleplay chats with a goal to reach. Audio is native-quality in a Mainland or Taiwan accent, and readings are shown in pinyin or zhuyin (Bopomofo).

Tone Lab

Hear a tone and name it, tell minimal pairs apart, then say the syllable back and listen to it next to a native speaker. Tone Lab does not grade your accent; you judge the difference yourself. Afterwards it shows which tones you mix up, so practice goes where it is needed.

Something new every day

A Taiwan news story each day at three difficulty levels, generated dialogues on any topic, chengyu stories, a private journal, and Ghost Month, a folk-tale game played in Chinese.

Reviews on a schedule

Reviews are scheduled by FSRS, the spaced-repetition algorithm also used in Anki, and fall due shortly before you would forget. Daily caps on new words keep a session short even after a large paste.
